나는 가상의 이야기를 현실에서 찾은 이미지로 재구성하여 사실과 허구를 넘나드는 경계에서 '그림이 무엇을 설명하고 있는가' 라는 회화의 오랜 물음에 관하여 작업한다.
'상황-설명적인 그림' 시리즈는 뉴스기사나 허구의 소설, 지인의 이야기 속 상황들을 개인적으로 경험한 이미지들로 전환하며 시작된다. 이러한 이야기의 힘은 재현으로부터 오는 것이 아니라, 특정한 문장이 그림으로 전환되는 과정에서 발생하는 수수께끼같은 이미지들이 만들어내는 빈 공간에 축적된다. 이미지의 일부를 흐릿하게 뭉개거나, 가려져 있거나, 오려낸 듯한 회화적 표현은 말과 그림 사이에서 생겨난 새로운 사건들의 공간을 확대시킨다. 이 공간들은 너와 나, 작가와 관객이 어떠한 방식으로 관계 맺고 이야기를 설명하게 되는지 공유하는 시간을 마련한다.
<홀인원> 시리즈는 일상 속에서 갑자기 마주한 '매우 특별한 순간'을 어떻게 받아들이는지에 대하여 홀인원을 기록한 실제 한 남자의 이야기와, 비극적으로 이 기회를 놓친 어떤 이의 뉴스 기사를 바탕으로 시작된다. 이는 의도치 않게 우연 혹은 운명적 순간을 기록하게 된 A씨와, 반대로 완벽한 타이밍을 만들기 위해 수많은 경우의 수를 발생시키려는 B씨의 시선을 교차적으로 배치하여 보여준다. 사실적이면서도 추상적인 이미지들은 실마리처럼 제시된 작품의 제목을 통해 사건을 추리하도록 하는 동시에 관람자와 작가, 서로에게 질문을 던진다. '어떤 이야기를 그리고 있는가?'
My work strives to answer the long-lasting question, ‘what does the painting explain?’ by reorganizing imaginary stories with actual images found in real life at the boundary between fact and fiction.
The series, starts with converting situations in news articles, fictional novels, and friend’s stories into images experienced personally. The real power of a story, rather than reproducibility, is that it is accumulated on empty space created in between puzzle-like images appearing during the process of a certain sentence being converted into an image. Techniques used to express an image (blurring out, covering up, or cutting out part of image) expands the space of new events reconstructed in between words and pictures. These spaces provide an opportunity for you and me, or artist and audience to share on how they come to relationship and explain their stories.
The series deals with how do people accept their ‘very special moments’ confronted rather suddenly, and begins with a true story of a man who made a hole-in-one and a news article of another person who tragically missed to make this record. The painting portrays Mr. A who unintentionally recorded a very lucky or destined moment, and on the contrary, perspective of Mr. B who tries to generate as many cases possible to make the perfect timing. Realistic yet abstract images along with titles given as clues allow us to infer the event portrayed and questions the audience and artist at the same time, ‘what is the story being painted?’
